Welcome to the Sample Unit Progressions and corresponding resources for Grade 4. These resources were developed and identified by Oklahoma educators to support instruction aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S) and are connected to the Grade 4 Bundled Standards Analyses. Recommendations are not intended to be an exhaustive listing of instructional possibilities

Check out this Guide to the Sample Unit Progressions for more details about each component in the unit.

Unit 1: Converting Energy

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 3-5 weeks

Converting Energy Bundle Analysis

Where do we get the energy we need for modern life?

How is energy transferred in all forms?

How can energy transfer be used to solve a problem?

4.PS3.2 Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.

4.PS3.4 Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.*

Unit 2: Motion

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 3-5 weeks

Motion Bundle Analysis

Why do objects change speed or direction?

What is energy and how does it affect the speed of objects?

How do collisions change the energy of moving objects?

4.PS3.1 Use evidence to construct and explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object.

4.PS3.3 Ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide.

Unit 3: Organisms

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 6-8 weeks

Organisms Bundle Analysis

Do plants and animals need all their parts to survive?

How do the structures of organisms enable life's functions?

How do animals detect, process, and use information about their environment?

How does the path that light travels affect what objects can be seen?

4.LS1.1 Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

4.LS1.2 Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.

4.PS4.2 Develop a model to describe that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen.

Unit 4: Information Transfer

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 3-5 weeks

Information Transfer Bundle Analysis

How can we use waves to gather and transmit information?

What are waves and what are some things they can do?

How can patterns be used for communication?

4.PS4.1 Develop and use a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and to show that waves can cause objects to move.

4.PS4.3 Generate and compare multiple solutions that use patterns to transfer information.*

Unit 5: Earth's Features

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 6-8 weeks

Earth's Features Bundle Analysis

What causes the Earth's surface to change?

How can fossils and layers of rock provide evidence of changes in the landscape?

How can the rate of weathering and erosion be affected by natural occurrences?

How can maps be used to determine the locations of Earth's features?

4.ESS1.1 Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.

4.ESS2.1 Plan and conduct investigations on the effects of water, ice, wind, and vegetation on the relative rate of weathering and erosion.

4.ESS2.2 Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features.

Unit 6: Human Environment Interactions

(Instructional Resources)

Suggested Timeline: 3-5 weeks

Human Environment Interactions Bundle Analysis

How do changes in Earth's systems impact communities and what can we do about it?

How does the use of natural resources affect the environment?

Where do natural hazards happen and how do we reduce their effects?

4.ESS3.1 Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from renewable and non-renewable resources and how their uses affect the environment.

4.ESS3.2 Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.*
