Guide to the Science Bundle Analyses

Grade 1:  Structure and Function

1.LS1.1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.*

In a Nutshell

Plants and animals have external parts that help them survive. Different parts help them to grow, move, and protect themselves in nature. Students use materials to design a solution that mimics these external parts to solve a problem or meet a specific human need.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Observe and compare a variety of external structures found in plants and animals and describe ways that they use those body parts for growth and survival.

  • Ask questions and make claims about how animals and plants use their external parts for growth and survival.

  • Communicate from observation how animals and plants use their parts to respond to things around them.

  • Design a solution to a human problem by mimicking an animal or plant’s external parts.

  • Provide materials and opportunities for students to observe a variety of external structures found in plants and animals and to describe each structures’ function.

  • Scaffold and assist students in communicating information from their observations and investigations of how animals and/or plants use their external parts to respond in order to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

  • Provide various materials and assist students in applying their knowledge about plants and animals to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking an animal’s and/or plant’s external parts.

Key Concepts

Misconceptions

Structure and Function

  • All organisms have external parts.

  • Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water, and air.

  • Plants also have different parts (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits) that help them survive and grow.

Information Processing

  • Animals have body parts that capture and convey different kinds of information needed for growth and survival.

  • Plants also respond to some external inputs.

  • Every human-made product is designed by applying some knowledge of the natural world and is built using materials derived from the natural world.

Influence of Engineering, Technology, and Science on Society and the Natural World:

  • Every human-made product is designed by applying some knowledge of the natural world and is built using materials derived from the natural world.

  • Plants cannot defend themselves against herbivores.

  • Traits are developed by individuals in response to the needs of the individual.

  • Acquired characteristics can be inherited.

  • Bigger organisms are more able to protect themselves and small organisms are helpless.
