Grade 1: Light

1.PS4.2 Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated.
1.PS4.3 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.
|
In a Nutshell
Students make observation to construct and explain that light is necessary for objects to be seen. Light can come from external or internal sources. Students plan and conduct investigations to determine that different materials respond to light in different ways. Some allow light to pass through, others only allow some light through, and others block light completely, creating shadows where light cannot reach. Mirrors can be used to redirect light.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions
|
-
Observe that objects can be seen if light is available to illuminate them or if they give off their own light.
-
Communicate using evidence how light is necessary for objects to be seen.
-
Plan and carry out investigations that show that some materials allow light to pass through them, others allow only some light through, and others block all the light and cause a shadow to form.
-
Plan and conduct investigations to gather evidence to support the idea that light interacts with materials in different ways.
-
Plan and carry out investigations that show that mirrors can be used to redirect a light beam.
-
Communicate using evidence that light is affected when an object is placed in the path of its beam.
|
-
Engage students in learning situations that allow for observing objects, both with and without light, to describe when objects can and cannot be seen.
-
Support students in making observations of objects that give off their own light.
-
Scaffold and assist students in communicating evidence from their investigations that light is necessary for objects to be seen.
-
Provide opportunities and materials for students to plan and carry out investigations using different materials that allow light to pass through them, allow only some light through, and block all the light creating a shadow.
-
Provide opportunities and materials for students to plan and carry out investigations that show mirrors can be used to redirect a light beam.
-
Provide opportunities to communicate using evidence from student investigations that light is affected when an object is placed in the path of its beam.

Misconceptions
|
Electromagnetic Radiation
-
Objects can be seen if light is available to illuminate them or if they give off their own light.
-
Some materials allow light to pass through them, others allow only some light through, and others block all the light and create a dark shadow on any surface beyond them, where the light cannot reach.
-
Mirrors can be used to redirect a light beam. (Boundary: The idea that light travels from place to place is developed through experiences with light sources, mirrors, and shadows, but no attempt is made to discuss the speed of light.)
|
-
Objects can be seen in complete darkness, after our eyes adjust.
-
Light can only be reflected from shiny surfaces (such as a mirror).
-
A shadow is something that exists on its own.
