2020 Grade 1 Bundle Analyses Home Page

Page history last edited by Heather Johnston 1 year, 9 months ago

The standards (right column) are grouped into bundles (left column) that represent one way educators might connect the science ideas within each standard to create instructional units of study. Note: This is just one example and does not encompass all the ways teachers might bundle science ideas.

Each bundle name is linked to a bundle analysis that provides a detailed examination of the standards in that bundle. Check out this Guide to the Science Bundle Analyses for more details about each component in the analysis.

Each standard is also linked to its own description, as outlined in the 2020 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S). Standards marked with an * indicated integrated engineering disciplinary core ideas.

Light

Light is necessary for objects to be seen. Light can come from external or internal sources. Different materials respond to light in different ways. Some allow light to pass through, others only allow some light through, and others block light completely, creating shadows where light cannot reach. Mirrors can be used to redirect light.

1.PS4.2 Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated.

1.PS4.3 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.

Waves

When materials vibrate, they can make a sound. Sounds can also make materials vibrate. People can use a variety of devices to communicate over long distances. These devices can use both light and/or sound to send and receive information.

1.PS4.1 Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

1.PS4.4 Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.*

Earth and the Solar System

Patterns of the sun, moons and stars can be observed and described by students. These patterns can be used to answer questions and make predictions. By observing the amount of daylight and relative temperature throughout the year, students can describe seasonal patterns.

1.ESS1.1 Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted.

1.ESS1.2 Make observations at different times of the year to relate the amount of daylight and relative temperature to the time of year.

Heredity

Students obtain information to determine how animals and plants can have young and how adult plants and animals can have certain behaviors that help their offspring to survive. Students make observations and collect evidence that plants’ and animals’ young are like their parents, but not exactly the same. Each offspring can have specific things that are like their parents, but can still have major differences from their parents.

1.LS1.2 Obtain information from media/or text to determine patterns in the behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive.

1.LS3.1 Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.

Structure and Function

Plants and animals have external parts that help them survive. Different parts help them to grow, move, and protect themselves in nature. Students use materials to design a solution that mimics these external parts to solve a problem or meet a specific human need.

1.LS1.1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.*

Human Impact on the Environment

Things that humans do every day to live can affect the world around them. However, they can make choices that can reduce their impact on the land, water, air, and/or other living things.

1.ESS3.1 Communicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.*
