An Introduction to Biology I

Students in Biology I will investigate key concepts for the life sciences. There are four disciplinary core ideas for the life sciences:

  1. From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
  2. Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
  3. Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits
  4. Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity

The performance expectations for high school Biology I blend core ideas with scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts to support students in developing useable knowledge that can be applied across the science disciplines.

3-Dimensional Science Vertical Learning Progressions

Descriptions of disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices students are learning throughout their K-12 education.

Bundled Standards Analysis

Examples of how to group standards based on common science ideas. Analysis is provided for each grouping of standards and is provided in a manner to support deep understanding of goals and expectations for the teacher and student. Recommendations are not intended to be an exhaustive listing of instructional possibilities.
